Higher order intersection numbers of 2-spheres in 4-manifolds

چکیده
This is the beginning of an obstruction theory for deciding whether a map f : S → X is homotopic to a topologically flat embedding, in the presence of fundamental group and in the absence of dual spheres. The first obstruction is Wall’s self-intersection number μ(f) which tells the whole story in higher dimensions. Our second order obstruction τ(f) is defined if μ(f) vanishes and has formally very similar properties, except that it lies in a quotient of the group ring of two copies of π1X modulo S3 -symmetry (rather then just one copy modulo S2 -symmetry). It generalizes to the non-simply connected setting the Kervaire-Milnor invariant defined in [2] and [12] which corresponds to the Arf-invariant of knots in 3-space. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for moving three maps f1, f2, f3 : S 2 → X to a position in which they have disjoint images. Again the obstruction λ(f1, f2, f3) generalizes Wall’s intersection number λ(f1, f2) which answers the same question for two spheres but is not sufficient (in dimension 4) for three spheres. In the same way as intersection numbers correspond to linking numbers in dimension 3, our new invariant corresponds to the Milnor invariant μ(1, 2, 3), generalizing the Matsumoto triple [10] to the non simply-connected setting. Pulling Apart 2–Spheres in 4–Manifolds
An obstruction theory for representing homotopy classes of surfaces in 4–manifolds by immersions with pairwise disjoint images is developed, using the theory of non-repeating Whitney towers. The accompanying higher-order intersection invariants provide a geometric generalization of Milnor’s link-homotopy invariants, and can give the complete obstruction to pulling apart 2–spheres in certain fam...

This is the beginning of an obstruction theory for deciding whether a map f : S → X is homotopic to a topologically flat embedding, in the presence of fundamental group and in the absence of dual spheres in a topological 4-manifold X . The first obstruction is Wall’s well known self-intersection number μ(f) which tells the whole story in higher dimensions. Our second order obstruction τ(f) is d...

متن کاملMultiple point of self-transverse immesions of certain manifolds
In this paper we will determine the multiple point manifolds of certain self-transverse immersions in Euclidean spaces. Following the triple points, these immersions have a double point self-intersection set which is the image of an immersion of a smooth 5-dimensional manifold, cobordant to Dold manifold $V^5$ or a boundary. We will show there is an immersion of $S^7times P^2$ in $mathbb{R}^{1...
متن کاملThe Stable Mapping Class Group of Simply Connected 4-manifolds
We consider mapping class groups Γ(M) = π0Diff(M fix ∂M) of smooth compact simply connected oriented 4–manifolds M bounded by a collection of 3– spheres. We show that if M contains CP 2 or CP 2 as a connected summand then all Dehn twists around 3–spheres are trivial, and furthermore, Γ(M) is independent of the number of boundary components. By repackaging classical results in surgery and handle...
